About Avocado

What is an Avocado?

The avocado is an evergreen, tropical tree with green, pear-shaped, nutrient-dense fruit. The term avocado refers to both the tree and the fruit. Avocados come in hundreds of different varieties. And the tree is a member of the flowering plant family, Lauraceae. The fruit itself is technically a berry containing one large seed. But keep in mind that the scientific definition of a berry (a fruit derived from the ovary of a single flower) varies from common usage. Botanists will tell you that eggplant is a berry and a strawberry is not. So I wouldn’t jump at a berry cobbler made by a botanist! While they aren’t sweet, avocados are a satisfying and versatile food with a creamy, buttery texture. And they have a rich flavour from the high-fat content.

Our Practices

Conditions required to grow Avocado Plant

Avocado is a subtropical tree and grows very well in semi humid climates.

Temperature

The ideal temperature should be between 16 to 40 Celsius. The trees are very sensitive to frost and high wind. They grow in all type soil with pH ranging from 5.30 to 7 except it should be well-drained.

Soil

Avocado trees thrive in well-aerated and loose soil. In particular, limestone, sandy loam and decomposed granite are the main soil types that encourage lush fruit growth. Although avocado trees tolerate both acidic and alkaline soils.

Water

Mature avocado trees need water equal to about 2 inches of rainfall or irrigation each week during summer.

Fertilizing

Fertilizing - Avocados do best with plant foods designed specifically for avocados and citrus. They prefer fertilizers with higher amounts of nitrogen relative to phosphorus and potassium.
